Great background, the rules are a bit clinky IMO.
People either love or hate GASLIGHT it seems. The mechanics allow pretty much anything, but are light on if you dont have some preconceived notions of what sort of VSF you want to play.

Yes I see your point, most of us stated with "Sword and the Flame"
or with the very similar Space
1889s "Soldiers Companion".They
are both a bit more structured.
We are working on a rewrite of
a set of rules called "Hardtack"
a American Civil war set based on SargruntII. We are using that and "Soldiers Companion" as the basis.
"Hardtack" was the idea of one of our contributors Allan Goodall.

There is a set of GASLIGHT rules covering larger battles. I havent seen them though
