Update: Blazing Skies

Introduction

Flying Officer Stumpy Prangsworthy’s handlebar moustache streamed behind him in the 280mph wind as he craned his head round trying to locate where Von Strudels Focke Wulf 190 A8 had gone to. Deep within the cloud, the spineless Boche had shown his true colours and escaped Stumpys righteous justice. The growling Merlin engine sang a new song as he side-slipped his trusty Supermarine Spitfire down towards the now helpless Dornier 17.

The Dornier was almost at the target and in scant moments would land at the brewery and snatch No14 Squadrons Claret from under their noses. Well Stumpy would see about that. He loosed the safety off of his eight .303’s and aimed at the Dorniers port engine.

Suddenly from behind screaming out of a wingunder manoeuvre the FW 190 appeared in Stumpys vanity mirror, its cannons sparkling motes of fire. A shell smashed into the Spits wing and tore the aileron. “Blast you, Von Strudel “yelled Stumpy as he realised that he had been sold a duffer and was gone for a burton. Only one trick could save him. Feathering his Kites prop, he hit the airbrakes and was rewarded with the bright green FW 190 flashing under him. Dropping the nose Stumpy let rip a corking burst which caught the Jerry a treat. Flames poured from the FW 190’s engine and Von Strudel Hit the Silk.

Von Strudel shook his fist as Stumpy flashed past. “Verdammt Englander! Finish me now! The shame is too great!”

“Not a chance old pip,” grinned Stumpy; “A Englishman flies by the rules of the game, and potting a Chap on his chute is defiantly not playing the game.”

Second ACW

 

Sacramento, California - July 9th. This was the first game of our Second American Civil War campaign. The factions fighting for the Constitutionalist side were the town of Locke's Japanese Militia, the local chapter of Minutemen and a group of Marxists who found it more convenient to fight with the Constitutionalists than the Nationalists. On the Nationalist side were reconnaissance elements of the 11th Cavalry Regiment and the local Citizen's Vigilance Committee. Reports of a Communist sponsored car theft ring and child labor camp operating outside of Monticello, California brought Nationalist forces to investigate. Their orders were to break up the ring by any means necessary and confiscate any stolen vehicles. The Constitutionalists put up a fierce fight but were eventually routed off the field. A small group of young boys that were obviously being held there against their will were rescued and turned over to the local Boys Home. Several of the stolen vehicles were recovered as well.

King’s African Rifles, 1914–1918

A Lieutenant of the King’s African Rifles (KAR) leads the 1st Section of his infantry platoon in a TSATF colonial wargame. The men in the first two ranks are Matchbox Japanese infantry with havelock cap covers, painted straight from the box, the others have had the Japanese steel helmet carved into a fez. The Lieutenant commanding this section is a Matchbox Japanese officer with a new head taken from an American Civil War infantryman wearing a slouch hat. All of the figures have been speed-painted by dipping the khaki-coloured plastic miniatures in polyurethane varnish tinted with ivory black artist oil colours. The pigmented varnish naturally accumulates in the folds of the miniature’s clothes, shading these areas. Only the boots, ammunition pouches, weapons, hands and faces were painted prior to dipping.

Askaris Of The Schutztruppe German East Africa 1914–1918

A Sergeant of the Schutztruppe for German East Africa leads the 2nd Section of an Askari infantry platoon in a TSATF colonial wargame. The Askaris are Airfix Japanese infantry who have had the steel helmet carved into a fez. The platoon Sergeant is a first edition Airfix German Afrikakorps soldier, who should have had his WW2 peaked cap replaced by a pith helmet. All of the figures have been speed-painted by dipping the khaki-coloured plastic miniatures in polyurethane varnish tinted with ivory black artist oil colours. The pigmented varnish naturally accumulates in the folds of the miniature’s clothes, shading these areas. Only the boots, ammunition pouches, weapons, hands and faces were painted prior to dipping.

The Mad Emir's New Mercenaries

The Mad Emir of El Shakoosh Kabir (deuced more dangerous as he was educated at Eton) has recruited a new mercenary Camel corps of very vicious warriors of unknown origin. In Italian reports one of their cavalry squadrons was all but wiped out by these horrid louts. It was even discovered by a relief force that all the horses were slain and several of those apparently cooked and eaten! The lone survivor of this attack a Cpl dispatched by his commander to report on the attack said that he saw these attackers hit several times at close range by rifle fire with no apparent effect! It has also been rumored that these mercenaries have been seen in other regions of Kookanyika and are responsible for several native massacres, even the destruction of a formidable Wazulu war party. There is no exact knowledge of their numbers but it seems to be no more than 60 odd, but there may be more. This constitutes a major provocation on the part of the Emir , and the colonial powers are expected to respond forcefully soon...
